Editorial Guidelines

“Effort must be made that slumbering souls may be awakened, the heedless become vigilant, and that the divine teachings, which constitute the spirit of this age, may reach the ears of the people of the world, may be propagated in the press and set forth with brilliance and eloquence in the assemblages of men.”

‘Abdu’l-Bahá

The pieces published on Horizons cast a spotlight on how the society-building power of the Faith is being released in ever greater measures across this vast country of ours. Each story showcases how individuals, communities and institutions are working towards the building of outward-focused and vibrant communities, whether through their work, in their neighbourhoods or in their everyday dealings with friends, family and acquaintances.

Our objectives include:

  • The creation of stories that reflect the diverse conditions and developments taking place across the various regions
  • The showcase and celebration of the country’s community-building process and how the society-building power of the faith is being released in ever-greater measures
  • Inspiring individuals, communities and institutions to consider their role in the Plan and how their relationship must be strengthened
  • Updating friends on important developments across the country, particularly those coming from the National Spiritual Assembly
  • Intensifying the spirit of cooperation between the institutions, individuals, and the community
  • Facilitating the flow of guidance and information between the institutions and individuals
  • Creating news stories that are accurate, reliable and dignified as much as they are inspiring and interesting for a broad demographic of readers

If you have a story idea you’d like to send through for consideration, please ensure it meets one or more of the above objectives. In presenting the story, it will be helpful to consider the following questions:

  • Does the story paint a picture of how the society-building power of the Faith is being released in ever greater measures?
  • Is the story informing or empowering the reader to take initiative and see themselves as protagonists of their own development and to find their place in the community-building work underway in their own neighbourhood?
  • Does the story cast a spotlight on the how the individual, the community or the institutions of the Faith are seeing a rise in capacity?

The Horizons team is open to receiving both story ideas and submissions and requires images to be sent through in both instances. Please ensure appropriate consent has been obtained for all imagery. It is vital that all individuals who are present in any photos are aware that their images may be used across Horizons platforms, including across social media and in print.

If you wish to submit a story in full, please ensure it is between 250 words and 500 words and is saved as a .docx or as a google doc. Please also be mindful that it will be edited according to the Horizons style guide.

You can submit all ideas through to horizons@bahai.org.au for consideration.
