Unit conventions and the unique nature of Baha’i elections

Baha’i communities across Australia have now participated in a distinctive feature of Baha’i administration: the election of delegates to the National Baha’i Convention. These elections, held in unit convention gatherings in local electoral units nationwide, are not only practical but profoundly spiritual, embodying principles that set the Baha’i electoral process apart from any other.

Unit conventions provide those formally enrolled in the Faith with the opportunity to elect delegates who will participate at the National Baha’i Convention, held annually in April during the Festival of Ridvan. The 95 delegates at this national gathering will, in turn, elect the members of the National Spiritual Assembly of the Baha’is of Australia, the body charged with guiding the affairs of the Faith across the country.

What makes these elections so special is the spirit in which they are conducted. Whether in Sydney, Perth, a rural town, or across the other side of the world, the process is the same in every corner of the globe: free from campaigning, nominations, and electioneering.  A letter written on behalf of the international governing body of the Baha’i Faith, the Universal House of Justice, states that:

As you know very well, the method of Baha’i elections is at complete variance with the methods and practices of elections in political systems. The beloved Guardian has pointed out to us that should we follow the method of the politicians in our Baha’i elections, misunderstandings and differences will arise, chaos and confusion will ensue, mischief will abound and the confirmations of God will be cut off from that Baha’i community. In view of these grave warnings, the utmost care must always be exercised so that the purity and spiritual character of Baha’i elections are maintained and preserved.

The Universal House of Justice

The atmosphere of Baha’i elections is one of reverence, humility, and unity, emphasising service, not a pursuit of power. Participants approach the task prayerfully, considering qualities such as devotion, capacity, and experience, rather than popularity or personal ambition. Shoghi Effendi, the Guardian of the Baha’i Faith, has stated that:

On the election day, the friends must whole-heartedly participate in the elections, in unity and amity, turning their hearts to God, detached from all things but Him, seeking His guidance and supplicating His aid and bounty.

Beyond the election itself, unit conventions are a space for vibrant consultation. Friends share insights, identify opportunities for the spiritual, social and material growth of their respective communities, study guidance from the institutions of the Faith, and strengthen bonds of fellowship. These conversations often spark initiatives that enrich community life long after the ballots are cast. This year’s consultations were framed by a message from the National Spiritual Assembly which posed questions to be explored, in light of recent guidance received from the Universal House of Justice. Participants shared insights regarding advancements made in their respective units while consulting on the learning that has been made over the past four years.

As we look ahead to April’s National Convention, these local gatherings demonstrate the Baha’i concept that every voice matters and every contribution counts. They provide a glimpse into the Faith’s principles of consultation, and how universal participation can bring about the common good. As Shoghi Effendi states:

Again I earnestly appeal to every one of you, and renew my only request with all the ardour of my conviction, to make before and during the coming Convention yet another effort, this time more spontaneous and selfless than before, and endeavour to approach your task—the election of your delegates as well as your national and local representatives—with that purity of spirit that can alone obtain our Beloved’s most cherished desire…
