Building capacity to engage in collective efforts towards transformation

For the past 25 years, the local Baha’i governing body of Ballina, the Local Spiritual Assembly, has built its capacity to engage in collective efforts with the broader community that are devoted towards advancing the spiritual, social and material affairs of the locality.

These efforts have included moral and spiritual educational classes for children, held in both school and neighbourhood settings, programs for the spiritual empowerment of young people, community service projects aimed at contributing to the welfare of society, and prayer gatherings that bring together individuals from all backgrounds in reflection of a common cause.

The Local Spiritual Assembly says that consultation has been integral to the development of the entire community, as individuals, the community and the institutions – the three protagonists of the society – have learned to engage in open and respectful discussion to come to a unified truth.

“We have learned that even though we are very small in number, those three protagonists need to work in unity so we can achieve our plans.”

The Assembly has also learned that having each of its members undertaking the Ruhi educational materials, devoted to empowering individuals to contribute to the welfare of society through the application of Baha’i principles, has aided the community-building process in the locality and enabled it “to have resources such as tutors, animators, children’s class teaches and organisers of devotional meetings.”

The Local Spiritual Assembly reflected on its progress at its recent 25th anniversary celebrations. While the exact milestone was reached on 21 April 2025, the celebration was held in November and was marked by congratulatory messages from former members of the Local Spiritual Assembly and past community members.

Presentations were delivered by present and former members of the community.

A special message was received from the local mayor, who has attended several Baha’i Holy Day celebrations in Ballina over the years. While unable to attend in person, the mayor thanked the community for “the positive contributions you continue to make to the cultural and spiritual life of Lennox Head and the wider region.”

“Your commitment to unity, peace, and the betterment of society reflects values that strengthen the fabric of our entire community,” her letter read.

The Byron Bay Baha’i Choir performed in honour of the anniversary, adding a joyful and uplifting spirit to the gathering. Guests enjoyed a selection of photographs and videos highlighting meaningful moments from the past 25 years, including a special video project from students attending the children’s class at the local school which featured the recitation of prayers from the Writings of the Baha’i Faith.
