Temple’s enduring spiritual influence felt at Family Day amid temporary closure

MONA VALE, NSW – Community-building efforts and devotional services continue to unfold in the grounds of Sydney’s Baha’i House of Worship despite the temporary closure of the edifice – bringing together friends from a diversity of backgrounds and ages in promotion of unity and inclusivity.

Key Points:

– The Sydney Baha’i House of Worship has closed for restorations, yet devotional services and community-building efforts continue to unfold on the Temple grounds

– A recent Family Day attracted more than 150 friends from a diversity of backgrounds, promoting joy, unity and reverence

– Participants commented on the spirit and uplifting atmosphere that continued to be felt despite the Temple’s closure

– Further gatherings are being planned, including a holiday program during the upcoming July school holidays.

The Temple closed its doors in April as part of the Dayspring of Light project which is dedicated to the restoration and beautification of the building and its surrounding gardens.

Earlier this month, more than 150 friends of all ages and backgrounds gathered in the grounds of the Temple for a Family Day, bridging cultural divides and promoting reverence and joy.

The day’s devotional service, held in the visitors centre, was a highlight of the program, with children and junior youth reading from sacred writings and contributing to the choir – reflecting the vibrant spirit and contributions made by young people to their community.

Many participants shared that they could still feel the Temple’s distinctive spirit and uplifting atmosphere despite the building’s closure – an encouraging reminder of its enduring spiritual influence.

Following the service, the Temple grounds came alive with a barbecue lunch, refreshments, and activities for children, including face painting, arts and crafts, and music. The atmosphere throughout the day was warm and lively, with many opportunities for friendship and fellowship.

One participant commented that “Perhaps the biggest achievement is not the renovation but the continuation of community building efforts despite it.” Another said: “What a feat!! Well done to all involved.”

Visitors also explored the Temple grounds and viewed recently-installed hoardings showcasing quotations about the House of Worship, historical photographs, and illustrations of the future design – inspiring reflection and deepening appreciation for the significance of the House of Worship.

Building on this momentum, further gatherings are being planned including a holiday program during the upcoming July school holidays.

The institution of the Baha’i House of Worship, or Mashriqu’l-Adhkar, translates to ‘The Dawning Place of the Mention of God’. It was ordained by Baha’u’llah Himself and is a pivotal concept of Baha’i community life, giving concrete expression to the unity of devotion and service
