How prayer, reflection and friendship are strengthening community bonds in Blacktown and beyond

BLACKTOWN, NSW – Several years ago, a small group of women in Blacktown, Western Sydney, began monthly gatherings for reflection, prayer and the deepening of friendships. 

The gathering was organised in response to the goals set by the international governing body of the Baha’i Faith, the Universal House of Justice, which has called on the Baha’i world to strengthen its community-building endeavours in an effort to build “havens of peace”.

“At the time, none of us imagined where this humble beginning would lead,” says Blacktown’s Ady Baghi. 

Like many community-building efforts, the journey included challenges. “There were moments when organising the gatherings required patience and perseverance,” Ady says. Yet each time the women came together, Ady says, they “witnessed the quiet power of prayer, genuine fellowship, and a shared desire to contribute to the spiritual life of our community.” 

Over the years, the gathering has gradually grown. Today, the monthly space welcomes around 80 participants and is hosted in Blacktown as well as other neighbourhoods across Sydney. “Friends come not only from different parts of Sydney but also, at times, from overseas,” Ady says. “Their reflections on the atmosphere of love, peace, and unity have been a constant source of encouragement for all of us.”

The gatherings for prayer, meditation and reflection are open to women of all backgrounds and beliefs. “Together we pray for the peace of the world, for the well-being of humanity, and for those facing illness or hardship,” Ady says. “We also celebrate special occasions throughout the year, creating opportunities for friendship, joy, and meaningful conversations.”

Ady says one of the most beautiful blessings has been how welcome everyone feels in the space. She says participants often share that the spirit of the gatherings brings them peace and hope.  

“Seeing friendships develop across different backgrounds and cultures has been one of the most rewarding aspects of this journey,” she says.

“Looking back, I realise that the greatest lesson has not been the growth in numbers, but the countless hearts that have been connected through prayer, kindness, and service. A gathering that began with just a handful of friends has become a warm and welcoming community, reminding us that even the smallest acts of service, when offered with sincerity and love, can grow in ways we never imagine. 

“For this, I feel deeply grateful to every soul who has been part of this journey. Their presence, encouragement, and commitment continue to inspire us as we move forward together.”
