‘The foundation of society’: A new podcast on relationships and marriage

In this interview with Australian Baha’i Horizons, Kian Jones and Nava Revalk Jones speak about their new marriage podcast and how they hope to inspire others to build joyful relationships.

In March 2024, Nava Revalk Jones and Kian Jones started a relationship podcast called That Married Couple, exploring various aspects of relationships and marriage from a Baha’i perspective.

Living in Sydney, Nava is a professional musical theatre performer and law student, and Kian works as a marketing consultant. They say the idea for the podcast emerged as they were getting to know each other and studying the abundance of Baha’i writings available on marriage.

“[We] struggled to locate specific information on navigating early relationships and investigation,” they explain. “After we got married, a friend suggested starting a podcast to share what we’d learned as a way of bridging that gap.”

Kian and Nava are That Married Couple.

With the media presenting extreme ideas about what relationships should look like, Nava and Kian say it can be hard to separate reality from drama, “causing a lot of confusion”.

They say the podcast is their way of contributing towards the discourse around relationships, providing impetus for people to have their own discussions, consider varying perspectives, and have a clearer vision for how they wish to conduct their own relationships.

“Studying Baha’i writings, attending courses, and having deep conversations helped us build a strong foundation for our relationship,” they say. “These experiences showed us the importance of intentional effort in creating prosperous relationships. Through That Married Couple, we hope to inspire others to reflect on and implement such principles in their own lives.”

Blending listener questions with insights from science and psychology, Baha’i and religious principles, and expert guest perspectives, the That Married Couple aims to create a space that’s entertaining, thought-provoking, and encourages meaningful conversations.

“Our goal is to be as useful to as many people as possible whether you’re single, getting to know someone, or married. Relationships are the foundation of society, and we aim to share insights that help listeners navigate challenges, find joy, and foster intentional growth.”

While insights are often shared from a Baha’i perspective, the episodes are designed to resonate with people of all backgrounds and ages.

“As we say in every episode, we discuss a way of doing things – not necessarily the right way or the only way, with the goal that everyone leaves with a better understanding of what they want to do going forward.

“We hope listeners leave each episode feeling inspired to reflect, ask questions, and deepen their connections—whether with a partner, family, or community.”

The podcast has not only provided an opportunity for Kian and Nava to share their own insights and experiences, but also to learn from others.

As we are still early in our own marriage, it has been amazing to learn alongside our listeners and guests. Interviewing couples from diverse backgrounds and stages of life has shown us the universal threads in relationships. It’s been inspiring to gather and share their wisdom, providing a guide that celebrates both shared experiences and unique perspectives.

“We’ve also loved the questions sent in by listeners and hearing their reflections and insights. For example, a few listeners shared that the concepts we discuss have been useful beyond just their romantic relationships but also in their friendships, family relationships and occupations too. Oh, and that everything comes down to communication and being intentional.”

Looking ahead, Nava and Kian want to grow the podcast and continue fostering conversations about relationships. “Our hope is to create a safe, vibrant space where people can explore these topics, ask questions, and feel empowered to build thriving relationships.”
