Cooking up a storm to address food insecurity in Logan city

The Baha’i community of Logan has harnessed its culinary skills for the benefit of the locals as part of a regular initiative dedicated to addressing food insecurity in the area.

The project took place in February as the Baha’i community organised a food stall and distributed food packages to residents in partnership with local organisations Funky Food and the First Step Foundation.

The Baha’i community of Logan has harnessed its culinary skills for the benefit of the locals as part of a regular initiative dedicated to addressing food insecurity in the area.

According to Food Bank, 30-35% of households in Logan City are food insecure. Local resident Homayoon Azemikhah said Funky Food donated fruits and vegetables towards the initiative, with some of the friends donating items including sausage rolls, pies, bread, rice and stew.

The food stall was set up at the local Hugh Muntz Park in the neighbourhood of Beenleigh. “It took us about 20 minutes to reach the park,” Homayoon said. “We entered the park and, as usual, stopped in our regular spot and began setting up the tables and chairs and placing the bags of food, fruit, and vegetables on the tables.

“Guests arrived one after another and enjoyed the food. After distributing the food in the park, we headed toward Marsden and delivered food packages to several homes, continuing until we reached Woodridge.

“With hearts full of spiritual love and gratitude, we sincerely thank those who participated in this program.”

The Logan Baha’i community regularly delivers food packages in the area.

The Logan Baha’i community regularly delivers food packages to those experiencing homelessness and financial strain in the area. Such Baha’i social action efforts seek to promote the social and material well-being of people of all walks of life, whatever their beliefs or background, and are motivated by the desire to serve humanity and contribute to constructive social change.

Whether modest or more complex in nature, these efforts tend to emerge out of growing collective consciousness, and are carried out by a group of individuals who are passionate about effecting change in their neighbourhoods through the application of Baha’u’llah’s teachings. Initiatives may be related to a variety of fields including health, sanitation, education, agriculture or environmental protection and aim to improve some aspect of the life of the local population.
