‘Take the first step’: Building connections at the neighbourhood level
DUBBO, NSW – Nasser Sedghi believes that building community and connection in one’s neighbourhood should be “welcomed by everyone”.
“If we take the first step, the rest of it will take shape into a very pleasant and rewarding achievement, that is: a strong, caring, and friendly neighbourhood, where all of us endeavour to bring up our families.”

Residing in a cosy cul-de-sac in the regional town of Dubbo, New South Wales, Nasser and his wife Farzaneh recently decided to host a neighbourhood gathering to strengthen connections in their area.
“After consulting a couple of neighbours, Farzaneh and I prepared an invitation, visited a few neighbours in person, fixed a date, and asked them to bring a plate to share and join us for an early lunch.
“The response was amazing. There was a great mix of people [including] a few children. We had lots of conversations, plenty of delicious food, music, and dance.”

Receiving positive feedback, Nasser says the gathering was “loved by everyone”, with neighbours suggesting it should take place on a regular basis.
“Neighbourhood fellowship helps us identify common ground,” Nasser says. “When it is done with sincerity, in a spirit of goodwill, we can create a connection with each other for the exchange of thoughts and practical service in the community.”
