‘Just being one’: Darwin children’s festival brings community together
A group of friends have come together in Darwin to host a children’s festival for their community, infused with music, joy, learning and oneness.
“Being a children’s class teacher means teaching the next generation. Showing them how to be good people,” said one youth, during his very first experience as a children’s class teacher at the festival.
The theme for the festival was service. The children and young people were able to explore what service meant to them and what it looked like in their daily lives.
“Clean the house,” said one child. “Do your chores,” said another.
The junior youth expanded on the concept.
“To make your community/home cleaner.”
“It helps others and builds a community.”
One parent remarked that these initiatives were what the community needed. “Bringing people from different cultures together … and just being one.”
Wanguri Member of Parliament Oly Carlson also attended the festival. She said initiatives such as the festival helped to build community. “This is what we need. We need communities to come back out and start helping each other.”
